Wireless Phone History
Cellular planning in the U.S. began in the1940's--just after the close of World War II--but trial service didn't begin until 1978, and full deployment to consumers did not get underway until 1984. Just as the vacuum tube and transistor made possible the early telephone network, the wireless revolution began in earnest only after low-cost microprocessors, miniature circuit boards, and digital switching became available.
Bell Laboratories' D.H. Ring articulated the cellular concept in 1947 in an unpublished company paper. W.R.Young, writing in The Bell System Technical Journal said, "Ring's pioneering paper stated all the elements of a wireless phone system: a network of small geographical areas called cells, a low powered transmitter in each, traffic controlled by a central switch, and frequencies reused by different cells."
